A quick way through a subtitle file
- Open both files. Drop the .srt or .vtt and the video or audio together, or one after the other. The subtitles become editable lines; the recording becomes a waveform with one band per subtitle.
- Listen line by line. Select the time at the left of a line to play from there. The line being spoken is highlighted as the recording plays.
- Fix words in place. Type directly in the line. Press Alt+K to pause and resume without leaving the text.
- Retime. Type a new start or end as minutes:seconds (1:05.5) or plain seconds. Lines stay in time order, and an end can never come before its start.
- Add what is missing. Alt+I inserts an empty subtitle at the playhead. It stops where the next subtitle begins, so the two never overlap.
- Export. Save SRT or VTT. Importing one and exporting the other is also how you convert between the two formats.
What the importer accepts
Subtitle files written by hand or exported by older tools are rarely tidy. The importer reads SRT and WebVTT with or without counters, with commas or dots in the times, with Windows or Unix line endings and with a byte-order mark. Styling tags such as italics are removed, and a WebVTT voice tag becomes the speaker name of the line.
Subtitles are sorted by start time on import. A subtitle whose end comes before its start is given a minimal duration instead of being dropped, so you can see it and fix it.
No subtitle file yet?
Open the recording alone and press Transcribe: the speech model writes the first version with timing, and you edit from there. The SRT generator page covers how to time subtitles so they are comfortable to read.
Questions and answers
Can I edit an SRT file I already have?
Yes. Drop the .srt or .vtt file on the page and its subtitles open as lines you can edit. Add the video or audio as well to hear each line and see it on the waveform.
Do I need the video to edit subtitles?
No. Text, times and speaker names can be edited without it. With the recording open you also get playback from any line, the waveform and, for video, a preview of the subtitle over the picture.
Can I convert SRT to VTT, or VTT to SRT?
Yes. Import one format and export the other. You can also export the same subtitles as TXT or DOCX.
What happens to my work if I close the tab?
The lines are saved in this browser’s local storage as you type and come back when you return. The recording is not saved: open it again to hear it. “Clear transcript” removes the saved draft.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Alt+K plays or pauses, Alt+J goes back five seconds, Alt+L goes forward five seconds and Alt+I adds a subtitle at the playhead. They work while you are typing in a line. The waveform itself moves with the arrow keys.
